The Cashcow

Hi Visitor, I’m KJ and the topic I chose for this project was housing affordability in Chicago. I chose this topic because it directly affects communities that surround me. The message of my artwork is to exaggerate the goal of developers to make profits off of people. People should care about the topic of housing affordability because homelessness is increasing in Chicago, the economy isn’t doing too well, there is a very high chance of us entering a recession by 2023, and housing is becoming more expensive while wages are not changing.

Recently I was walking to get some food and I went to the local Walgreens in Englewood. There was a homeless person outside, on drugs. This made me think about how the only way they could possibly feel satisfied with themselves is the use of a substance. Things like these are not uncommon and it seems that there is no solution or resources for these people to get help. One of the ways to help is to allow people to be able to get housing so they can deter from drugs and get back on their feet.

The medium I chose is a drawing. The materials I used were green colored pen, a black pen and paper. I chose drawing to have the freedom to exaggerate the role that developers play for their own personal gains. It gets the message across in an easily digestible way. Basically you just need to look at it once to understand what it means. I used repetition from the usage of the word profit on the cow’s suit to accentuate their role. I used hyperbole by using a cow to play on the term cash cow. I am using pathos because I want people to feel and be informed about what is going on.

I would want this art to be on buildings, specifically apartment buildings to send a message that that is probably what is going on in that apartment building. This would be a use of irony because it wouldn’t make sense for the people that built the building to allow a piece of art that disrespects them in a way. This would be impactful because it’s a very simplified version of a very complicated issue.
