Finding Nora
Hey, In this Action Project in Drama we were asked to create a play that will give us some insight on how we can challenge gender norms and stereotypes. Before we were asked to make this Action Project the activities that we did before this was read the play A Doll's House and get some historical context to what Norway was like in the 1800's. After reading this book we discussed what were the gender roles in the book A Doll's House and how those roles could've been broken by characters. Most importantly how Nora reacted to the roles that she was forced in, due to her significant other. We agreed that the main action that Nora committed at the end: her leaving Torvald and trying to find herself, broke the gender role of a woman financially or emotionally depending on a man in order to feel like they fulfilled what was socially expected at the time, and after some more discussions dissecting the book this was the next project we were introduced with. The character I picked to talk to Nora was Agnodice due to the motivational story that was used to describe her. That was basically her breaking more gender roles by becoming a physician solely for women and proving that women can perform well in the medical field and that it should be legalized for them to work in said field. Even if the story is fiction I think it could be a very fitting character due to the demonstrated characteristics of fearlessness and benevolence it would take to do such actions.
SCENE 1
[NORA is running away from the townsfolk in a midwest 70s town and AGNODICE is treating women in this town and sees a flash of a woman running in the window of her hospital.] - SLUG[FOOTSTEPS] - SFX
[Huffing and Puffing] - SFX
(Nora falls to the ground) - Action
[Agnodice walks out to take care of the fallen Nora] - Action
A Couple Hours Later
(Nora wakes up suddenly while Agnodice is taking care of her) - Action
[Nora is in a bed, right next to her is a night stand with a book and a cup of water on it]
Nora: DON'T LET ME GO BACK TO THAT WRETCHED MAN.
Agnodice: Calm down madam. You fell unconscious. Why were you in a hurry? And what man are you talking about?
Nora: My Ex Husband! He’s been following me ever since I left him and the children. He’s even sent his workers after me!
(Agnodice thinks to herself that Nora is still delirious due to exhaustion)
Agnodice: I think you need to rest a bit more and drink some more water
Nora: It’s true! I would never lie about such a thing especially in this matter!
Agnodice: Calm down madam, you are safe here. No unregistered man can walk in here. It’s a facility for women to be taken care of. No man in this town knows what goes on here.
Agnodice: People that aren’t in an emergency can’t come in here without an appointment
(An assistant walks up to Agnodice) - Action
Agnodice: Is there something wrong KHAYYEL?
Khayyel: A patient in the other room is having contractions
Agnodice: Okay it seems like - Oh how rude of me. I never got your name. What’s your name?
Nora: It’s Nora. Thank you for helping me.
Agnodice: It’s my job, no worries.
Agnodice: I’ll be going now, my assistant will be here to supervise you.
Nora: Okay.
(Agnodice walks out the room and closes the door)
(Agnodice walks back)
Nora tells the story of how she was caged in a marriage that she emotionally grew out of and decided to leave even though she was financially taken care of and wouldn’t have to work at all.
Agnodice agrees to take care of Nora while she is trying to find herself
END OF SCENE 1
Nora found that she likes to tailor people’s clothes and her business is starting to gain some traction in the town.
She becomes prepared to make a divorce case so she won’t be completely out of her kids' lives.
SCENE 2
SLUG LINE: Court room, Citizens at the hearing, children and lawyer on Torvald’s side physically, on the opposite side is Nora, Agnodice, and a lawyer, In front of them is a huge desk and a judge
[Judge slams hammer]
Judge: BREAK!
A distinct conversation is being had with Torvald’s lawyer and Nora
Lawyer: So what you’re saying is that he was treating you like a doll?
Nora: Yes, he had full control of what I did. To what I ate, and what I did while he was out.
Lawyer: Well you’re gonna have to tell the judge so they can get proper context of why you left so sudden
Lawyer: Even though the easy argument for the defendant is that it isn’t ILLEGAL, it can still help in this case
Nora: I don’t want other’s thinking I’m still that same faceless Nora. I feel like if I show that negative period in my life it could limit what other people might think I
Agnodice: Being open with past experiences shouldn’t make others think of you in a certain way. It can also help you accept for what the outcome came to and could help you grow as a person.
[TO BE CONTINUED]
I think the hardest part for this project was creating the dialogue between the characters since that can be very hard to minimize such a huge problem into one project. I wouldn't say I overcame this challenge due to the time I had. The best part that I enjoyed was probably just helping out my fellow classmates in creating their projects.
