The Socratic Method

The last 2 weeks we’ve been asking ourselves philosophical questions and learning about Socrates to try and apply his way of thinking to our own ideas and personal beliefs. We were questioned and asked to answer things like What is Beauty? What is Justice? What is Equality? What is Love? What is Reality? And we were shown images of these things with the question and were asked if the images properly represented these things. We then asked each other questions based on the theme we were researching (The themes were Beauty, Justice, Equality, Soul, Reality, Freedom, and Love.) and used the same method as Socrates so we can get a deeper understanding into why they think that. This method of thinking can be considered dangerous because you’re challenging the person’s thinking in a way that could come off as annoying since you’re constantly asking “Why” or hypotheticals that make the person think more about their answer than just saying something on the fly which is way easier. A perfect example of this would be the story of Socrates since he was charged for defying the athenian gods and misleading children which lead him to being executed (self inflicted from drinking poison) for this exact way of challenging people’s beliefs and think pieces. This video is a theme about The negatives of technology advancement and how it could affect someone. The last 2 weeks we’ve been asking ourselves philosophical questions and learning about Socrates to try and apply his way of thinking to our own ideas and personal beliefs. C1 - Are you okay? You didn’t say hey to me on the first day back

C2 - I don’t think I can talk to people offline anymore.

C1 - Why’s that?

C2 - I've only been talking to people online since the whole pandemic thing began.

C1 -  Do you think the fact that necessities are able to be provided on your phone and the fact that you could create any image you want to be perceived by others has made you want to stay online more?

C2 - Not really, I think it would just be awkward since we haven't spoken in a while.

C1 - Don’t you think this could lead to you developing social anxiety due to you not talking to someone physically?

C2 - Well not talking to someone face to face has taken its toll on me socially and because of anonymity it's easier for me to insult someone if I don’t have to look at them and say it.

C1 - So your social skills were better before you were online?

C2 - Well I guess to an extent yea I was pretty social before everything was online, not talking to someone face to face has made it harder to communicate with other people.

C1 - Do you know what a parasocial relationship is?

C2  - No.

C1- A parasocial relationship is usually developed when someone is online excessively and in order to fill the social interaction void that is caused from being inside and not talking to people they form some connection to youtubers, streamers, celebrities, and people like that.

C2 Now that you say it I can see how having little social interaction can cause me to seek friends who don’t know me as a person and only as a viewer.
